New kid on the block: Toyota Voxy Review

by Konstantin Alatortsev

You don’t see many of them around just yet. And it’s a shame considering how good these minivans are. You may have already heard the name but most likely know very little or nothing about this Toyota model. So let me introduce it to you. It is called Toyota Voxy and it is a gem! So let’s give it a short review.

You look at this beauty for the first time, and suddenly think that it looks like a Toyota Alphard’s little sibling.

You catch yourself thinking: ‘While I cannot afford an Alphard, I can easily consider buying this beauty’ – and it is true: being very reasonably priced, it is a great option to keep in mind!

The Toyota Voxy people mover comes with 7 or 8 seats with two rear sliding doors.

Let’s take a closer look at the various generations of this remarkable people mover:

1. The first generation (R60) was released in 2001. The facelift model was out in 2004, and discontinued in 2007.

2. The second generation (R70) was introduced in 2007. The facelift model was released in 2010, and discontinued in 2014.

3. The third generation (R80) was launched in 2014.

It became the first Toyota minivan to have one-touch auto sliding doors (meaning being able to open both sliding doors not just with a touch of a button on the remote, but also by pressing a button on the door itself – very fancy!)

The third generation (R80)

This generation Toyota Voxy also receives an engine start-stop system, 10-inch infotainment display (where you can change the language to English without a headache of replacing a genuine TOYOTA head unit with a cheap aftermarket one!), wireless phone charger, Panoramic Live Sound System (eight speakers), rear parking camera with guidance lines, USB/AUX inputs as well as Toyota Safety Sense which incorporates features such as collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane assist and high beam assist.

General purpose ISOFIX child seat fixer bar + top tether anchor (second seat left & right) – so it suits families with babies perfectly fine! One more anchor point is installed at the back on the left at the time of compliance in Australia. Additional anchor points are available.

Interior comfort options include side window blinds and multiple adjustments for the middle row of captain’s seats.

Third-generation Voxy

The third-generation Voxy received a facelift in 2017 with significant changes to the lights, bonnet, bumper and the front fender.

We can only import the petrol modifications of Toyota Voxy in a Welcab (wheelchair accessible) version which can comfortably seat up to 6 adults plus a wheelchair occupant. Wheelchair access is from the rear of the vehicle by an electric fold out wheelchair ramp with lowering suspension. They have the 2 L petrol engine.

Тhe latest generation of the Toyota Voxy have a 1.8 L petrol hybrid engine (which are allowed for import) as well as a 2 L petrol one.

Hybrid Voxy’s have a very impressive fuel economy of 4.2 L / 100 km (23.8 km / L), so with a 55L fuel tank most drivers would achieve well over 1,000 km per tank.
This means you can get your whole family in comfort from Brisbane to Canberra using just one tank of fuel which is absolutely incredible for a minivan weighing 1600 kg!!

The Dimensions of Toyota Voxy 3rd gen (R80):

  • Length: 4,695 – 4,710 mm
  • Width: 1,695 – 1,730 mm
  • Height: 1,825 mm

Engine: 2ZR-FXE 1797 cc L4 DOHC 16-valve VVT-I petrol engine, paired with electric motor/generators in the hybrid drive system. Together the engine and electric motors produce 100 kW (134 hp).
This engine is the same as the one in Toyota Prius/Prius V’s which have been very popular here in Australia so spare parts and servicing are not an issue.

Toyota Voxy Hybrid models are all 7 seater variants only with the second row of captain's seats having class leading 810mm long rails allowing them to be moved very far back and forward. A low and flat floor increases interior space and makes putting your flat pack IKEA furniture in the trunk a piece of cake!

Toyota Voxy Hybrid model line-up:

Voxy Hybrid V (the most popular for import)
Fog lights, cruise control and leather steering wheel standard.
Heated seats, dual power sliding doors and rear camera optional

Voxy Hybrid ZS

Let’s sum up what makes Toyota Voxy a perfect choice for your big Aussie family:

  1. QUALITY BUILD
Like all JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) cars, Voxy is a high-quality vehicle made for the great road trips with your tribe.
  2. FUEL ECONOMY
No matter how long the road trip is, with fuel economy of 4.2 L / 100 km you will be surprised how little you spend on petrol!
  3. RELIABILITY
Toyota Voxy’s hybrid engine is the same as the one in Toyota Prius/Prius V’s which have been widely used as taxis so it shows how unbelievably reliable they are.
  4. INTERIOR
Very versatile and spacious cabin with lots of features and entertainment unit can be changed to English language.

When thinking of buying a JDM people mover, many people do not look at anything but Toyota Estima and Nissan Elgrand, although Toyota Voxy is another great example of a spacious, extremely reliable people mover, and if you are a family with kids (no matter how long your road trips are!) and decide to pick it, it won’t disappoint!

Happy Road Trips!
